Personality: Ren Tsuruga is admired by most of his co-workers for his sense of responsibility and dedication to his job. He's been called "a man of principle", and has a record of punctuality. He is never late and completely reliable. He tries to work together with everyone so that things run smoothly. Being somewhat of a perfectionist, he's an even harsher critic on himself than Director Ogata, and asked to reshoot scenes where he was struggling during "Dark Moon" before the director could even ask for one. The reason he takes acting so seriously is because he failed horribly back in America. Ren refuses to return home until he has become a truly successful actor to the point where he avoided contacting his parents for five whole years. He was that engrossed in reaching his goals, and too strong-willed to return in failure.
Though outwardly Ren is a gentleman, he can also be difficult to approach. At times he distances himself from others, and offers very blunt (even harsh) criticism. Other people may have trouble approaching him simply because of his celebrity status. Truthfully, Ren has a dark side that surfaces when he is extremely angry. When he is caught up thinking about something he dislikes, his personality will get unusually frigid. He also has a "shining" fake smile at his disposal that leaves his "enemies" bewildered and unable to think straight. Kyoko very quickly seems to pick up on these fake smiles.
Ren is clever. He is able to read into situations easily when given incomplete information and can oftentimes see through lies. He also gets angry suddenly and it is (at least for some individuals) difficult to determine the exact cause, since he usually gets mad without explanation (only his "aura" changes, and his words turn bitter). Two things that seem to make him angry are being told he can't do something and Kyoko saying that she did him a favor "because so and so asked me to!".
Ren refuses to let himself fall in love, choosing to keep his feelings "chained up". He seems to battle with the idea of himself being in love and not wanting to be. Though he says "I have no intention of falling in love with anybody... I can't afford to have anything precious...here..." he later amends this to saying he can't fall in love at all, that even if the person he was in love with was not in high school, he'd just invent new excuses for himself. Kyoko notes that Ren seems to retreat deep into himself, to a dark place where no one can ever reach.
The truth is that the gentleman "Ren Tsuruga" is actually a role that he's created for himself in the acting field. He separates himself from the person he was as a child, believing that he has become "rough, wild, and incapable of being loved", a far cry from the innocent boy that he once was. Predictably, Ren seems to place value on innocence and purity and seems to lament how much Kyoko has changed. Initially he is largely unaccepting of her, having no desire to act alongside someone who has no real interest in acting. As Kyoko begins to delve deeper and deeper into the field, however, proving both her talent and the ability for her to really love acting, Ren's respect for her grows. Over time he places a great deal of faith in her and acts as her mentor.
Ren is very stubborn and strong-willed, choosing to follow things through to the end - which is why he's still working hard at his career. It seems that Ren will not take his troubles to other people and will thus suffer on his own. There were a few instances where Ren confided in Kyoko about his worries, but all times she was disguised as Bo the Chicken. Though Ren claims he takes good care of himself, he very often forgets to eat "real food", something his manager worries over and Kyoko later scolds him for. He does not, however, seem to have anything against alcohol, and can be seen drinking it at home occasionally or at parties. It is revealed later on that his mother used to stuff so much food into his mouth when he was a child, that he couldn't breathe, and the mention of food would bring tears to his eyes. Perhaps this is why he's sacrificed a healthy diet.
